It is pretty safe to say that Michigan’s cool-season is a bit longer than the rest of the country’s. We experience some of the coolest temperatures in the winter, which lasts what seems like forever. Due to our unique winters, it is vital to our landscaping that we take care of our irrigation systems and water features.
Especially in places like Novi, West Bloomfield, Northville, and their surrounding areas, we see quite a few water features being displayed on properties. It is so common that it could be called even a “trend” in places like Wayne County. When you choose to winterize your landscaping, you will be protecting your water features and all the work you have put into it this summer.
When you winterize your irrigation system, you essentially remove all the water from the system altogether. Each irrigation component (meaning the features, the hose, the pipes, etc.) is rid of all water. This is so that the water will not be able to freeze within the components. If it does freeze, it can cause extreme damage to the parts of the irrigation that are underground. Those parts include things like sprinkler heads, pipes, valves, etc.
Technically, there is no actual date that winterizing is best done in. However, the general rule that Images Landscaping gives is that this needs to be done before the ground freezes. Once the ground freezes, the issue becomes more and more prevalent and it may be too late for you to winterize your irrigation system and water features.
If you chose a company to install your irrigation system because of their awesome warranty for it, you will be sad to hear that the warranty may be void if you don’t choose to winterize. This is because if you are not caring for your system properly, companies won’t put in the work to fix it. This leads to the next good reason to winterize your irrigation system… it is a huge money saver. Between cleaning up the mess it causes, the underground damages, and for the cost of a new system, you are looking at thousands of dollars. The money-saver option would be to spend a little more upfront and save your wallet in the long run.
Our specialty is landscaping, but what is landscaping if your irrigation system can’t keep it looking pristine year after year? It would be a shame to spend all that money on beautiful water features and elaborate irrigation systems to ensure that you are keeping your landscaping up only to lose it when the winter comes and ruins the way you do that.
